From the Engine Room #5: When a Fan Starts to Lose Its Balance

In October, vibration measurements were carried out on the Accommodation AC blower electric motor.

The initial results showed:
🔧 RMS velocity up to 6.88 mm/s at point H2

Not extreme at first sight — but the frequency analysis told a clearer story.

In the FFT velocity spectrum, a strong 1× rotational component of the blower was observed.

📊 What does it indicate?
A dominant 1× frequency in fan or blower systems typically points to mechanical imbalance or airflow disruption, often caused by:

dirt and deposits on the fan
loose mounting or structural instability

👉 In short: the system is no longer running “cleanly” — it is fighting itself.

Based on this pattern, we recommended:
🔧 cleaning of the fan
🔧 inspection and retightening of mounting bolts

✔️ The crew confirmed significant dirt accumulation in the motor and blower
✔️ Several fundamental bolts were found loose
✔️ After corrective work, vibration levels dropped noticeably
✔️ The 1× component in the spectrum significantly decreased

✅ Result: System stabilized. Risk eliminated. Potential motor damage avoided.
